About Swashthya Sakhi

Menstrual hygiene is one of the most important, yet neglected, health issues in the developing world. In India, approximately 70% of all reproductive diseases are caused by poor menstrual hygiene. A Unicef study revealed that 10% of Indian women believe that menstruation is a disease. Limited access to information, as well as cultural taboos and social stigmas attached to menstruation have a negative impact on the lives and health of millions of girls and women. It is a taboo subject, surrounded by silence and shame, that also restricts women’s access to normal activities and services. Many girls and women miss school and work every month because they do not have access to sanitary pads. In June 2013, we launched our Menstrual Health and Hygiene Program which expanded into All INDIA in 2022. Through this project, we distribute low-cost subsidized sanitary pads to rural women and girls and raise awareness about the importance good menstrual and personal health practices in local schools and villages. More 30000 people attend each year these information sessions.

Our Story Swashthya Sakhi

Swashthya Sakhi began its work in the mid-2022 when initiated a number of small programs to improve the living conditions of the Himalayan people.

The programs were designed to address the inequalities and suffering they observed in the region. They were a natural progression of the founders’ dedication to these communities and an expression of altruism in action.

Rooted in the ideal of “compassion in action,” we serve others with joy and determination by cultivating altruism in our hearts and actions.

We strive to reduce suffering in the Himalayan region and work toward a fairer and more compassionate world. We believe that communities can be lifted out of poverty, that change is possible, and that the well-being of every individual, regardless of race, gender, class, or caste, is essential.

We provide vulnerable and disadvantaged populations access to health care, education and vocational training, clean water, solar electricity, and other sustainable solutions. Our programs are interconnected, working together to provide short-term support that fosters long-term change.

We believe that building on local strengths and knowledge is the most efficient way to respond to the specific needs and aspirations of our beneficiaries. Our comprehensive development strategy is based on active community participation, women’s empowerment, and the preservation of local resources and culture.
